The LAM
The Laboratory of Astrophysics of Marseilles is one of the most important public research institutes in Europe in the area of astrophysics. It associates fundamental research in astrophysics with technological research in instrumentation.
LAM teams carry out research programs in the areas of cosmology, galactic dynamics and evolution, interstellar medium, stellar and planetary system formation, the solar system, and optical systems for astronomy.
In large part due to the excellence of the engineering departments (design and mechanical engineering, integration and testing, optics, electronics, and quality control) and unique expertise in the area of optics and opto-mechanics, the various LAM teams lead instrumentation projects for national and international agencies (CNES , ESA, NASA , ESO,..). The LAM manages two technology facilities open to researchers and companies including test equipment for space environments and polishing of large aspherical optics pieces.
A department of computer science develops new algorithms and pipelines for data reduction, and coordinates data archiving with databases available from the Virtual Observatory.
The LAM is a joint research unit (n°6110) attached to the Astronomy Observatory of Marseilles-Provence under the auspices of the CNRS (National Scientific Research Center) and the University of Provence Aix-Marseilles.
